Sonic World engine is a very advanced enhancement of the BlitzSonic engine, which has been around for quite some time.

I have put together all of my skills and carried this potential to the top.

You can play what we’ve already made, but my engine lets you make your own stages too, continuing the trend from BlitzSonic.

There are 15 playable characters, but don’t let that scare you away, because I assure you all are individual and fun.

I have aimed mostly for Adventure style gameplay.

I hope you will enjoy my engine as much as we did while working on it. :)

So, features:

  • 15 playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Cream & Cheese, Blaze, Silver, Omega, Espio, Charmy, Vector, Big & Froggy, Metal Sonic
  • All characters share main moves like stomp and spin dash, making all provide the same level of entertainment.
  • All characters also have their individual special moves: Sonic’s ring dash, Shadow’s chaos spear, Cream’s Cheese attack, Silver’s psychokinesis, Knuckles and Rouge’s climbing, and more.
  • All characters’ jump actions are also varied: homing attack, fly, glide, double jump, and more.
  • Detailed and animated menu.
  • Biography menu.
  • Configurable controls.
  • Guaranteed to run fast, compared to my previous BlitzSonic engines.
  • In-game object placer!
  • All different kinds of objects, chosen carefully from all games in the series for the best experience: spring, dash pad, dash ramp, dash hoop, rainbow hoop, item capsules, item balloons, fan, varied spikes, varied boxes, varied bumpers.
  • 12 different Badniks (excluding their variations) with different attack patterns.
  • Different types of missions: normal run, time attack, robot killer, ring collector, treasure hunt.
  • Advanced camera controlling with translator objects (springs etc).
  • Different shields, and insta-shield for Sonic
  • Water-running
  • Underwater physics
  • SA2-like movement. Unlike most BlitzSonic engines, the movement of the player has been changed. You will turn more instantly like Adventure games, unlike more circular like recent modern games.
  • Responsive controls.
  • Carefully thought-out new features such as being able to jump in air if you fall off an edge.

Few notes:

  1. As the game’s nature is “engine”, there aren’t much stages for it, but we have two great ones to offer: Final Rush and Seaside Hill.
  2. Only Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Shadow, Rouge were seriously animated. I just ported animations to the rest so that we can play as them until their animations are completed. That will be done in future.
  3. We have no concern for great graphics. As you will see, we work with pretty low poly. Please understand that and think about our game in terms of gameplay and otherwise what we intended to produce.

Here are gameplay videos of each character on my YouTube channel. Note that these videos are all about 8 mins, so it would take a while to watch all. Watch only the introduction and Sonic videos if you prefer to do so.

Lower the resolution in the options menu. The lowest resolution is 1066X568.

I really enjoyed having a go at this. It has been a long time since we’ve had the chance to play as characters other than Sonic in a 3D game (not counting the Generations model swops.) The fact that you’ve implemented the characters’ unique abilities and that they also move faster than a snail (SA2 Tails, I’m looking at you) is the icing on the cake!

The levels seem pretty well designed although sometimes the springs necessary to continue on are a little hidden and take a few seconds to find (specifically Seaside Hill.) More of a nit-pick than anything, though. You may also want to put maybe an extra 30 seconds on the clock because if I didn’t see that video, I wouldn’t have believed it was possible to finish the stage.

This probably sounds a little odd, but my favourite level was actually the Test Level. It felt like a real playground and some of the cylindrical tubes slightly disorientated me, when running upside-down. On a side note, one of the speed boosters in the Test Level smacks you face-first into a wall.

Something I felt that I had to mention as well is that the graphical quality is more than adaquite. I’m really looking forward to seeing what progress you make. Great work!

      Hi

Thanks for the comment! Glad you liked it.

About the booster in Test Level smacking you to the wall: It’s meant to be like that, it’s a test :D

Nice game! Enjoyed it a lot. Controls really well and haves nice graphics. The fullscreen problem kinda sucks but still the game is awesome!

Some screen resolutions, such as the default 1066×568, won’t be able to go fullscreen. Try around.

I am on an Apple Mac, and it says my computer requires a $20 something program to run it?

You’re using a mac, simple as that, if you can use bootcamp to run windows, you should be able to play it then. No I’m not ozcrash I just know this stuff.

This game totally wasn’t made for Mac. Sorry about that.

I found this very frustrating to play. The controls felt to jerky and sensitive, making something as simple as turning round very difficult and annoying.
The camera was quite bad, it wouldn’t turn with your character, so if needed to go back, you could see where you were going. I know you change control it with the mouse, but you cannot do this without moving. If your going to have the camera controlled by the mouse, all the keyboard controls need to be mapped for the left hand, with two actions, jumping and spin-dashing for example, mapped to the mouse buttons.

Well yeah, isn’t that how mouse controls are?

The camera is quite responsive. It’s the SA2 camera. I don’t really understand what you are talking about.

If you need an instant camera turn, use right SHIFT and left SHIFT just like SA2 and Sonic Heroes.
There is also ALT for instant camera angle fix.
(You can change these buttons in Options.)

I’ve ran into an odd problem: I can’t interact with objects at all while playing this game on my crummy old laptop, yet it works just fine on my desktop. It’s really strange, like the objects exist and I can homing attack into them, but they don’t react to anything. The enemies just stand still, the rings don’t rotate, the springs don’t launch you, and somehow the checkpoints are both active and not active at the same time.

If it helps, the laptop is running a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset and does NOT support DX11+, OpenGL 3+, OpenCL, CUDA, PhysX, or DirectCompute. The desktop, on the other hand, is running a GeForce GT 610 (or 630, can’t remember off the top of my head) and does support all of that stuff.

Objects will disable themselves under 15 FPS.

I reduced that to 5 now. Please look out for the second release to try again, which will be really soon.
