Sonic the Hedgehog 3D

Sonic the Hedgehog 3D is a free fan game about a famous SEGA mascot, Sonic, and it is made on Build Engine with additional EDuke32 port. The game was inspired by two classic Sonic series: Mega Drive/Genesis and Sonic Adventure series.

STH3D is probably my longest running project ever. I started it years ago when I was a huge Sonic fan and since then it was improving. Most of the time I’m working on the game alone, but I wouldn’t complete it without help of my friends.

Hope you’ll enjoy the game!

Story

The story begins with evil Dr. Robotnik and his minion Metal Sonic stealing the Master emerald from Angel Island. Blinded by Metal’s flashbang bomb, Knuckles, the keeper of the Master emerald, confuses Metal Sonic for the real Sonic. “Argh! What… S-Sonic?!” – shouted Knuckles, falling to the ground. Robotnik and Metal escape, and Angel Island, not being powered by the energy of Master emerald anymore, falls down into the ocean. In the distance, near Tail’s workshop, him and Sonic both noticed the island falling. “Something wrong happened to the Master Emerald!” – shouted Sonic. Inside the workshop, Tails used his radar and finds out that the Master emerald has been stolen by Dr. Robotnik for his new evil plan.

“Just as I thought” – said Sonic – “Quickly, let’s find him!”. Tails and Sonic get into the Tornado and fly away, heading to Dr. Robotnik’s base. “What about Knuckles?” – asked Tails. “Don’t worry, that Echidna is a real tough guy. I’m sure we’ll meet him on the way to the base”. While that happens, Knuckles and his sidekick Mighty follow Sonic and Tails on the foots. “Sonic must be working for Robotnik now! That hedgehog isn’t gonna get away with that!” – said Knuckles, noticing the Tornado in the sky. “We’ll get them soon when they will land” – said Mighty.

Half way there, the plane suddenly runs out of fuel and crash-lands on Green Island. “What shall we do now?” – said Tails, looking at the big island. “Find Robotnik’s secret base and spoil his evil plan of course, just like we always do!” – said Sonic confidently. The two friends got out of the plane and began exploring the island.

And so, the adventure begins…

I’ve seen this game quite a few times on the internet but never got around to playing it myself. I like the atmosphere this game creates a lot, I feel right at home with it. My inner oldschool FPS fan and Sonic fan selves are equally satisfied.

I really enjoyed this game! One of the bests on the SAGE. Levels were fun and emblems were a nice addition!

I have a question. Is there a level/mod from Sonic 06? I think I saw some screenshots of it some time ago.

Definitely one of the best here at sage this year. I loved the level design and even if the graphics are primitive, you used them consistently and intelligently. I did a 1st impressions video of it on my channel and I plan to do a whole lets play on it once sage is done. Awesome job on this man! http://youtu.be/sqcGF9eetz0

When I reached that transition zone between Fuel Station and Anichent Palace, I knew I was in for something awesome. This game is probably the best thing at SAGE (Second best, actually. Da Rock is Da Game of Da Year), and I felt it played almost like a SA hub world with objectives. And I love that, it’s very unique.

    Thanks for the comments!

There was a Sonic 06 mod, but it’s not compatible with recent versions.

Quick question, ZykovEddy. Is this the full version, or a demo?

Basically, this is all I have at the moment, so I guess there’s no point to call it a demo.

Just played this through. I like the idea of this game. It’s like Genesis Sonic in story/mechanics but in 3D. And that’s pretty cool. I liked some of the button puzzles, like the ones in the underwater ruin level. I also didn’t quit half way through, so that’s something worth noting.

I have a few things to talk about, though. First off, it seems like the camera is too zoomed in on Sonic. If you could put camera zoom on the scroll wheel or something, that would be great.
Secondly, I always seem to get lost in the levels, especially towards the end of the game. It just becomes a maze of things looping into previous things with (for the most part) no signs telling you where to go. (Like in the level with the big castle, I didn’t even know I was supposed to do anything in there.)
Also, this game is a pain to play with an XBox 360 controller. Setting movement to the joystick is weird because it’s hard to stop moving and you turn far too quick, meaning you have to play with the D-Pad, which is really a pain for your thumb.
Last thing, although at this point I’m just nitpicking: The textures are too hi-res for the level geometry. It’s weird walking though a land of cubes and 45 degree ramps when you can point out the tiniest details on the floor and the really hi-resolution labels on the coke machine compared to the snack machine right next to it in the final level. Either make the level geometry more complex or downscale the textures.

These are good points, I agree. I think I can downscale some of the textures, but sadly I can’t fix the controller issues. It’s engine related, and I have no control over it, but I remember playing it with a D-Pad and it wasn’t so bad. At least the 360 D-Pad is not so bad as dualshock one from PS1 era, hehe.
